Public Speaking is not Easy

Public speaking is not easy. Requires well defined objectives, to be clear, concise, organized and know what our target audience. We put a cap on our exposure, not too long to not “tired” to listeners. You should not say more than about 150 to 175 words per minute, so that people can follow your dissertation properly. Nor say less, so that people do not get distracted or lose interest in the subject.

    1. The addressees.

Who will be our audience: students, professionals, entrepreneurs ... will help us focus our discussion properly.
    2. Organization.

Exposing an organized manner all the issues we can make it easier to follow the “thread” of our conversation.
    3. Extension.

Expose only the fundamentals of the subject. Do not want to extend to exhaust the subject. The public would end up getting tired and losing their attention.
    4. Objectives.

We realize how good and defined the objectives of the talk, lecture or conference. We must “be clear” what is the message we convey to our audience, without repeating in endless words that we do not lead to any clear conclusion.
    5. Aid.

Tell your side with all kinds of aids that make understanding of the exhibition is making: projectors, computers, slides, graphics and any documents that may provide listeners. However, without abusing them, completely marginalizing the speaker.

At the time of speaking must not forget these key points:

    1. Place the microphone at the right height and make sure that the sound reaches the room.

    2. Organize the introduction, development and conclusion of the talk.

    3. Do not abuse the gestures and body language.

    4. As far as possible, interact with the audience, to make it more enjoyable.

    5. Talk as if addressing only one person.

    6. If you are delayed, summarize unimportant parts.

    7. Avoid distractions: noise, mobile, music and more.

One of the most popular models for correct exposure is spoken SPAM model. This gives us 4 basic points:

    1. Situation

Consider the time and place at which to hold the event.
    2. Purpose.

The goals that he hoped to get on with his talk.
    3. Hearing.

A person is destined to our conversation.
    4. Method.

What method we use to our conversation.

The method used is of great importance for the success of the talk. We have main methods:

    1. Informative.

What is presented is new to the audience, and outlines a clear and precise so that the information presented is useful to the audience.
    2. Persuasive.

He tries to explain characteristics of a product or service, to convince the convenience of it.
    3. Entertainment.

The occasion of the exhibition tends to have a purpose of entertainment.

Apart from the method chosen for your conference, lecture or exhibition, should consider certain points to any kind of talk:

    1. Be brief in the acknowledgments and awards prior to the talk.

    2. Keep your head high and look to the front and the audience, whenever we can.

    3. Caring for your voice. Use an appropriate tone, a vocal correct and adequate volume.
The best we can do before a “performance” in public is to practice.
    1. Read his paper on high several times to listen. And even burn it, and listen or have someone with you to opine.
    2. Use your body language and gestures, as if before the public. It is best practice in front of a mirror.
    3. Try to memorize key parts of the text, to avoid a continuous reading of it and stay too long with his head down - head down.
